Zero Emissions Steel TechnologY (ZESTY) Deep-Dive Webinar
Supporting Parents and Carers: Fostering a Work-Life Balance at Calix and Leilac

Calix hosted a deep-dive webinar, 31 July 2025 on it’s Zero Emissions Steel TechnologY (ZESTY), a breakthrough innovation designed to support the decarbonisation of the iron and steel industry.

ZESTY uses green hydrogen in a renewably powered reactor to produce green iron, and aims to offer a scalable pathway to zero-emissions steel production.

The webinar was presented by Managing Director and CEO, Phil Hodgson and CEO-Elect ZESTY and GM Sustainable Processing, Chris Ormston with special guest Dr Ingrid Burfurd, Carbon Price and Policy Lead at The Superpower Institute, and co-author of “A Green Iron plan for Australia”.

Together they covered ZESTY’s potential to replace traditional carbon-intensive methods with green hydrogen and the flexible use of renewable energy to convert even low to mid grade iron ores into green iron.

Dr Ingrid Burfurd provided a compelling policy and economic context for ZESTY’s potential, emphasising the $400 billion opportunity for Australia in green iron exports, and the importance energy flexibility and policy mechanisms to accelerate adoption of suitable technologies.

For more on The Superpower Institute’s findings and potential of ZESTY, listen in to the “Seizing the green iron opportunity with ZESTY” podcast presented by Chris McMahen from The Superpower Institute, Max van Someren from Bivios and Chris Ormston from Calix. Together, they explore the scale of the challenge, emerging technology solutions like Calix’s ZESTY, the economic and environmental implications for Australia and the world, and what more is needed to seize the opportunity.
