Steel is the backbone of modern society, yet conventional steelmaking is one of the world’s largest sources of industrial emissions. Green iron therefore offers a large opportunity to contribute to both global decarbonisation and development.
If Australia can take advantage of its iron ore and renewable energy resources to export green iron in place of iron ore, it is estimated that it could:
- Add 3x the value of its largest source of export income – from $120 billion for iron ore currently to up to $386 billion annually for green iron by 2060.
- Abate 3x Australia’s current domestic emissions – equal to roughly 4% of the global total.
