Phil Hodgson – Carbon Capture from Cement and Lime Manufacturing

Australian Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage Conference featured leading edge case studies on the latest development of CCUS technologies including Direct Air Capture (DAC) both in Australia and around the world whilst providing the ultimate platform to connect & network within the industry.

With the Morrison Government’s recent announcement of an additional $539.2m for hydrogen and CCS in May’s budget, carbon capture is now a key part of Australia’s transition towards clean energy and carbon neutrality. One of the priority technologies in Australia’s Technology Investment Roadmap, CCUS technology has been identified by the International Energy Agency (IEA) as the only large-scale mitigation option available that can deliver the additional CO2 emissions reductions that would be necessary to meet the climate goals in 2050.

Phil Hodgson, Managing Director and CEO of Calix, presented Calix Carbon Capture technology for Cement and Lime Manufacturing.

About LEILAC

The LEILAC project is based on a technology called Direct Separation, which aims to enable the efficient capture of the unavoidable process emissions from lime and cement production.

Calix’s technology re-engineers the existing process flows of a traditional calciner, indirectly heating the limestone via a special steel vessel. This unique system enables pure CO2 to be captured as it is released from the limestone, as the furnace exhaust gases are kept separate. It is also a solution which requires no additional chemicals or processes, and requires minimal changes to the conventional processes for cement as it simply replaces the calciner.
