Addressing odour and corrosion challenges
An Australian water utility, operating an extensive sewer treatment network, recently engaged Calix to address odour and corrosion challenges.
The customer had observed elevated hydrogen sulfide levels at a long-retention transfer pump station, contributing to odour and corrosion issues. Although the asset had only recently been commissioned, signs of corrosion had already been identified. Methane was also detected at the site, triggering requirements for ATEX-rated instrumentation.
Smart Monitoring and dosing delivers more effective wastewater treatment
To address the site-specific challenges, Calix designed and implemented a tailored dosing and monitoring strategy, leveraging its ACTI-Mag® product and proprietary mobile Flex Dosing System.
During a three-month trial, continuous hydrogen sulfide and methane monitoring informed flexible and responsive dosing. As a result, hydrogen sulfide concentrations were reduced by 95%, bringing levels below corrosion thresholds and significantly improving workplace safety. Methane concentrations were reduced by 66%, falling well below the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL).
From trial to ongoing application
Following the successful trial, the customer has implemented a permanent Calix dosing solution at the site. Discussions are now underway to expand use of Calix’s ACTI-Mag product and Flex Dosing Systems to additional locations across the utility’s network, building on the outcomes achieved during the trial.
