Calcined clay produced using the Calix technology has successfully completed product development by Boral Limited, marking a significant milestone toward commercial use of low-carbon calcined clay concrete in Australian buildings and infrastructure.
Boral confirmed that product development was completed following extensive laboratory testing and large-scale field trials of low-carbon concrete mixes incorporating Australian calcined clay. The results demonstrated the viability of calcined clay as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), with performance comparable to traditional low-carbon concretes. The testing program included real world trials at Boral cement operations and follows earlier technical feasibility work undertaken with University of Technology Sydney and Transport for NSW as part of a SmartCrete CRC project.
The calcined clay was produced using Calix’s renewably powered electric calcination technology, which enables clean and precise mineral processing and supports the development of lower carbon intensity supplementary cementitious materials for the construction sector.
The success of Boral’s product development represents a significant step in advancing practical, scalable pathways to reduce the carbon intensity of cement and concrete in Australia, and reinforces the potential of the Calix technology in enabling next generation low emissions building materials.
