The unique bioactive properties of Calix’s high surface area magnesium oxide materials are enabling novel solutions for crop protection in agriculture, non-toxic marine coatings, and non-lethal alternatives to biocides and antibiotics for the prevention of antimicrobial resistance.

Leveraging its platform technology for sustainable mineral processing and capture of unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions, Calix is also developing sustainable processing solutions for magnesium metal, a critical mineral used in lightweight metal alloys.

Safe & non-hazardous

Calix’s magnesium oxide materials are non-toxic, non-hazardous and non-corrosive. They enable environmentally sustainable alternatives to conventional materials that can damage the local environment, and are safer and easier to handle.

Alkalinity & pH control

The ability to strongly buffer wastewater within a desired pH range as it undergoes treatment is crucial to maintaining optimal conditions for microbiological activity and reliable wastewater treatment performance. 

Calix’s magnesium hydroxide products deliver hydroxide ions to water to manage alkalinity and provide strong pH buffering.

Cost-effective caustic soda replacement

With a much higher neutralising value, magnesium hydroxide is not only more sustainable than caustic soda, but more cost-effective, enabling an approximate 40% reduction in chemical usage. 

Non-lethal crop protection

Reducing dependence on lethal chemical pesticides is an important challenge for the agriculture industry. Calix’s bioactive products can be applied as a foliar spray to leave a protective residue on crops that provides non-lethal pest suppression.


Safe and non-toxic to pest and beneficial insects, magnesium hydroxide based products can deliver low-cost and environmentally sustainable alternatives to conventional insecticides, and may also augment magnesium deficiency.

Preventing antimicrobial resistance

Following many years of overuse and the development of antimicrobial resistance, reducing reliance on conventional pesticides, biocides and antibiotics is urgently needed.


The antimicrobial properties of Calix’s unique bioactive materials, with low resistance development potential, offer a promising sustainable alternative to conventional actives in health and livestock applications.

Sustainable marine coatings

Marine biofouling increases hull surface roughness, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Conventional anti-foul paints and coatings are toxic and have negative effects on the marine environment.


To deliver more sustainable marine-fouling and corrosion control, Calix is developing non-toxic bioactive additives that aim to enable a material reduction in the use of toxic biocides.
