Reducing dependence on lethal chemical pesticides is an important challenge for the agriculture industry.

Existing chemicals and pesticides are being deregistered, or regulations around when and how they can be used are becoming tighter.

Increasing regulation follows recognition that conventional pesticides are often toxic, can persist and accumulate in the environment, reduce biodiversity, and are becoming less effective through the development of target resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance is now a rapidly emerging global crisis following many years of antibiotic overuse.

It is projected to cost the global economy US$100 trillion and cause 10 million deaths per year by 2050.

Reducing reliance on conventional pesticides, biocides and antibiotics is urgently needed. Novel bioactive materials could provide sustainable replacements to damaging products in agriculture and help prevent the rise in antimicrobial resistance.

Our solution

Calix’s unique non-toxic bioactive materials show promising potential to suppress pathogenic microorganisms and insect pests through a generally non-lethal mode of action with very low resistance development potential.

Safe

Derived from natural magnesium carbonate minerals, Calix’s materials are non-toxic to humans, animals, fish and plants (non-phytotoxic). They are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and classified as non-persistent, non-bioaccumulative and non-toxic (nPBT) by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

Sustainable

Non-lethal pest suppression is designed to reduce the use of conventional insecticides and support beneficial insect activity.

Cost-effective

The use and cost of conventional pesticide applications and the overall intensity and cost of agronomic management can be reduced without compromising crop yields or quality.

Preventing antimicrobial resistance

The antimicrobial properties of Calix’s unique bioactive materials, with low resistance development potential, offer a promising sustainable alternative to conventional actives in health and livestock applications.

Proven & registered for use

Following six years of rigorous testing and field trails, BOOSTER-Mag 609 S.CTM was registered for use by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).

 

The registration is for use as a non-lethal insecticide for the suppression of two-spotted mite (Tetranychus urticae) in tomatoes and cucurbits (field and protected crops). BOOSTER-Mag is the first registration of a magnesium hydroxide insecticide in the world.
